DASAVATHARAM- A REVIEW

Well the buzz in chennai is about dasavatharam..every1 as usual have an opinion on it...some are awed by it, some think its a mere waste of time, both the actor's as well as ours...well here is what i think of the movie..
i think its like the movie 'matrix'..remember, the first time u saw it? u wr awe-stuck by its graphics and stunts that u never bothered to dwell into the story part of it...you saw it again to comprehend the theme, n now after 2 sequels also u still have not understood the director's tots completely....

Kamal i guess is sick of being branded as an intellectual..he wanted to make a movie which the massess wl also understand..so he sugar( or masala) -coated it using the ingredients of the chef- K S Ravikumar...kudos to ravikumar for making an extremely intelligent film sound like a dumb movie...tho kamal has cleverly sprinkled clues all over the movie to tell he his class apart from the others...he has beautifully deconstructed a complicated story line and made it as simple as possible a la steven spielberg style...

Compromise- this is what kamal has done for the sake of the producer n director. The brilliance u saw at the begining of the movie wanes slowly post the interval...i feel this movie cld hv been 10 times better had it had a more intelligent director...dialogues are witty and outstanding in some parts...

All actors except Kamal of course have little or nothing much to do than to share the screen space with Kamal.Technically sound. A superb script but heavily watered down(by the climax tsunami?) due to the constraints of tamil cinema. Its like a roller-coaster kinda ride with its highs n low...can be watched atleast twice.
Cheers,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The phone rang. She got up. She smiled, she knew she would be happy today. It was a missed call, from her son in the USA. The missed call was a signal for her to come online. She switched on the computer and logged into the Y! Messenger. There they were, the whole family waiting to wish her. Her grandson, the 2-year-old, managed to utter something, which sounded faintly, like Haaappi Burrrday between stifled yawns and giggles. The daughter-in- law, full of love, said there was a big surprise waiting for her today! Probably, they were coming down here?? No, it was too far-fetched. She smiled sadly at the thought.

The surprise arrived in the form of a courier. It was a bouquet of beautiful flowers, dark chocolate and a painting kit. Her breakfast was the chocolate given by her son. It filled her heart with happiness. Friends and relatives called to wish her and she accepted all of them with a smile. She found the remark of her friend who said, “ You will live to be a hundred” particularly amusing.

The portrait of her husband looked different today. It was as if his eyes had a concealed gleam in it. She thanked him for giving such a filling and happy life. She had this sudden urge to paint. She took the painting kit given by her son and sketched out a portrait of the whole family, together.

Priya, her niece came at around noon and took her to her favorite restaurant. She was pampered and she enjoyed both the food and the company of her niece.
“ So, what does the birthday baby want to do now? Go home and take some rest?? asked Priya.

“No, No!! I am not tired. I was thinking of doing some shopping.”

“Oooo...more dresses eh, Aunty?”

“Not for me! I wanted to buy something for you and my son’s family.

“Ahem, ahem, me also? Cool! But I warn you I could wipe out all your savings and you might never come for shopping with me again”

She smiled in answer. Priya never ceased to amaze her. She was hardly twenty but she looked completely in charge of everything. She was beautiful, dressed boldly and spoke (nonstop) with utter confidence.

They shopped for nearly three hours. Priya took an hour for choosing a kurthi for her tight denim. Mix n Match, she remarked. They dispatched the items to the USA through the courier, whose charges as Priya quipped, were more than the cost of the gift themselves.

“Lets go to the beach!” declared Priya. She knew that the beach was her aunt’s favourite spot and she was determined in making this day special for her aunt.

The beach evoked many memories in her. The waves brought forth the memories of her husband and son. She remembered the times they built castles in the sand, and her son’s promise to build her a castle where they could all live happily together. She missed them both equally. It was her choice to not go to the USA. It was her decision to stay alone. Alone with the memories of her husband. But now she could sense the feeling of loneliness catching up with her, even though she tried to keep it at bay by engaging herself in many hobbies during the day. It was during the night that she felt the loneliness very creepy. But today, she knew it would be different. If only all days could be as special as this! The waves receded back.

“Aunty, here’s my gift! Priya said, handing over a neatly wrapped box. “Do not open it now, go home and see it” she ordered!

It was 8.PM when they got back home.

“So aunty how was your day”, asked Priya.

Happy!! came the reply.

“Cool…that makes it a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! K, chalo, me leaving gotta do some stupid maths assignment…you sure you don’t want any dinner huh? K then catch you this weekend. Good night and Happy B’day once again!!

She smiled.

She opened the gift. It was a photo album. It had all the photos of her. As a baby, as a girl, as a woman, as a wife, as a mother, as an aunt and as a grandmother!! She was moved to tears.
Tears of joy! She looked at the portrait she had painted this morning.

She prayed.

She switched off the lights. She felt happy, she felt content. She went to sleep, forever!!
